How to manually pin shortcuts to Metro in Windows Developer Preview

To manually pin a program (or file, folder, etc.) to Metro in Windows 8 Developer Preview you just need to create a shortcut in the following way:

  1. Browse to C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Immersive Application Shortcuts\
  2. Create a new folder named “custom.application_8wekyb3d8bbwe”. (You can change custom.application with anything you’d like)
  3. Inside that folder, paste the shortcut to the file or program you want to add to Metro.
  4. That’s it! The shortcut should now appear in Metro.

This is perfect for non-install programs such as PuTTY or Minecraft.
